Sorry I’ve been MIA lately. I actually have two new recipes to put on this blog, but life got in the way by means of purchasing our first home!!! After being dirt poor for almost 3 years in San Francisco and then saving like crazy at my parents home for another 3 years we finally bought a house!
It wasn’t an easy journey trying to buy a house in a very competitive DC Metro area market. We put a failed bid on a house back in November on a house my husband loved, but I was ok with. We then looked around for houses for the next couple of months, finding things we liked and didn’t like. Ultimately we didn’t put any bids because we didn’t love the house.
Then suddenly in April we fell in love with a house in our perfect neighborhood. Though the house was a bit small, it was great because the previous owners maintained and updated it. It truly was turn key ready, and we were ready to move in. We put our best foot forward with what we thought was a pretty competitive offer. The owners had 6 or 7 offers on the table by the deadline. Later that evening our realtor called to say that we lost out to two other contracts that offered no home inspection and no appraisal contingencies!!! We were heart broken, and I was personally ready to throw in the towel until the fall when things would be less competitive.
Dan and I took a much needed break from open houses the following weekend, which aligned perfectly with our weekend trip to LA. We were still getting e-mails about possible homes that were coming onto the market, but that weekend we really took a step back and let the market do its thing.
That following Monday night Dan noticed that a house in our perfect neighborhood still didn’t turn pending. They almost always turned pending by Monday evening in this neighborhood. We texted our realtor to see if she could show us the house first thing Tuesday morning. Dan and I toured the house and loved it, even more than the last house that really deflated us. We walked away saying we would think about what kind of offer we wanted to make. But then our realtor texted just a few hours later that there was already an offer on the table. After discussing what kind of offer to make with our realtor, we sent our offer at around 6pm. And then three and a half hours later we found out they accepted our contract!!!
The last month especially has been quite the whirlwind for us with all the house searching/buying. We close at the end of the month. We’ve already done our home inspection, which turned out really well. The appraisal is done. We just need to get the results of the radon test and a chimney inspection. Then we just need to sign on the dotted line. Crazy!
Hopefully I can keep up with doing my recipes in the next couple of weeks, but right now I’m consumed by paint swatches and furniture! We do have to figure out how to decorate a 2900 sq. ft. house!!! So apologies ahead of time for the infrequent posting. But I’ll keep trying to bring you delicious updates, and maybe a few updates on the house.
